Our technology:
Flexible. Animal-free. Cost-effective.

Our platform uses the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum as a eukaryotic expression system for the production of recombinant antibodies (Phaeobodies®) and other proteins. By combining flexible transformability, precisely controllable culture conditions and a completely animal-free system, our technology offers a powerful and cost-effective alternative to established platforms such as CHO, HEK or insect cells and polyclonal sera.

Controlled conditions
for consistent quality

Standardized cell cultivation in photobioreactors

Cultivation takes place in closed photobioreactors under strictly defined conditions – without serum, animal additives or complex medium components. This enables us to guarantee standardized production with high batch consistency and reproducible quality – even over longer periods of time and at an affordable price.

Constant glycosylation – a clear advantage

A major advantage of our system is the constant glycosylation pattern of our Phaeobodies® compared to animal systems. The most important difference to animal glycosylation is the increased incorporation of mannose, especially Man-8 and Man-9, the so-called “high-mannose glycosylation”. These patterns also arise in animal systems and are of no functional disadvantage for diagnostic use. On the contrary, the constancy of glycosylation in the Phaeobodies® enables consistent properties across different batches.

Versatile expression formats

Our platform enables the expression of a variety of protein formats, including:

  • Antibody formats: IgG, scFv, nanobodies (VHH)
  • Fusion proteins: e.g. with HRP, AP, epitope tags (His, FLAG, etc.), fluorescence markers (GFP, mCherry)
  • Other proteins: e.g. enzymes, reporter proteins

Versatile generation strategies

Antibody sequences are generated as required on the basis of:

  • existing sequences (e.g. from databases or literature)
  • Sequencing of existing hybridoma cells
  • de novo selection using phage display to identify specific candidates against new targets possible by arrangement.
