These are questions that many people ask when they hear about it for the first time. Rapid tests such as the Pregnancy Test rely on the interaction of detection molecules called antibodies. These antibodies bind to the surface of the test and also bind to the target molecule, the pregnancy hormone hCG.
Conventional antibody production involves immunizing a single mammal. To produce large quantities, antibody-producing cells are then used in several animals to amplify the antibody. In addition to animal production, antibody production is also possible in animal cell culture. However, this requires the use of animal components such as fetal calf serum (FCS) or bovine serum albumin (BSA). Both of these are derived from the blood of a living animal.
